Should Curtains Be Longer Than Windows?

Share with Friends

Curtains remain a favorite window treatment for homeowners. Few options can beautify and elevate a space in the way curtains do. However, to enjoy the benefits, you have to make the right choices, starting with the curtain measurements.

What’s the right length to go for? Should curtains be longer than windows? Jamestown’s custom window drapes experts look at the details in this post.

The Right Length for Window Curtains

One of the first things you should know when it comes to the length of your window curtains is that there is no one-size-fits-all rule. The right curtain length will vary depending on how you use the room and your personal preferences.

But should curtains be longer than windows, at the very least? Yes, short curtains are no longer in fashion. Unless you’re going for an older interior design theme, it’s best to ensure your curtains are longer than your windows.

Long, quality curtain panels can add a touch of elegance to any space, making it feel bigger than it is. Depending on the curtain material, long curtains can also improve your home’s insulation.

Measure the curtain length from the top of the window and down toward the floor.

How Long Is Too Long?

Generally, curtains should sit just a centimeter or two above the floor for a practical and stylish look. These floor-length curtains won’t collect too much dust. You can also easily clean around them. However, floor-length curtains aren’t your only option.

The two other length options you can go with include:

Puddle Length

Puddle-length curtains have enough fabric to form a pool on the floor. This design style looks great when you choose fabrics associated with grandeur and opulence, such as velvet. The dramatic and luxurious effect makes puddle-length curtains a great choice for living rooms.

However, you should keep in mind that puddle-length curtains are harder to maintain. They may also constitute trip hazards in high-traffic areas.

Break Length

Break-length curtains are the best choice if neither the puddle nor floor-length options appeal to you. They are longer than the windows but stop at least an inch above the floor. They are great for more high-traffic areas around windows and doors, as they won’t quite pick up as much debris and dust as the other options.

Should Curtains Be Longer Than Windows Everywhere?

Curtains should only be longer than windows in living areas and in places where long curtains will not get in the way.

Windows in your bathroom and kitchen should have shorter curtains because longer ones will get in your way or get wet. You also don’t want long curtains for windows over a dresser or bed.
