Window treatments provide the perfect finishing touch to any room. Besides serving an important function by providing privacy, light control and temperature control, they appeal to a room’s aesthetic. The term window treatment can refer to blinds and shutters, drapery, valances, cornices and roman shades. At Window Works Studio, we design, fabricate and install all types of custom window treatments to meet your specific need for function and style. We also work with various vendors to offer excellent quality blinds and shutters. These include Hunter Douglas, Graber, Somfy and more.
Custom Shutters
The most common type of window treatment found in homes are blinds. Often, people use the term “blind” or “plantation blind” to refer to almost any type of window treatment. However, a blind is a horizontal stat treatment. The slats tilt open/close and the entire blind can be raised up to the top of the window. The slats come in ½” to 2-½” widths. Blinds are relatively inexpensive and are made of vinyl, composite wood or hardwood. Though they are attractive, the primary function is for providing privacy. They serve as a great base layer that will coordinate with any other type of window treatment, such as drapery and valances.
Shutters are a larger investment and is thought of as a permanent fixture in the home. Shutters have panels that open and close like a door and louvers that tilt open/close. They can be made of vinyl (great for bathrooms), composite wood and hardwood. They can be painted or stained. Shutters look great as the only window treatment on the window, but also work well with drapery.
Shades can be in the form of roman shades that are made from any type of drapery fabric. We make this in our Jamestown studio. Or, they can be shadings such as woven wood shades, cellular shades, roller shades and sheer shades. We represent several companies that specialize in the development and manufacturing of these types of shades. Hunter Douglas, Graber, Comfortex and Somfy are a few companies we work with.
